Imperial Logistics

Creating an efficient and engaging workplace learning experience

Our agency was selected to digitise the employee training material for a new HR software launch across the African operations of Imperial Logistics, a global logistics and supply chain company. Our services included Project Management, UX Configuration, UI Design and Video Editing.

Problem

70% of change management initiatives at organisational level fail due to low stakeholder buy-in and once-off training sessions that speed through the material. Imperial Logistics wanted to improve the success rate of the change up-take to their new HR software in its businesses across Africa.

Solution

We digitised Imperial Logistic’s change management training material by creating 47 video explainer modules for their HR, Recruitment and Onboarding workflows. Using authoring tools, we developed the modules into engaging online courses which were integrated into their LMS.

Personas

We wanted to form an understanding of the different employee types in the organisation. So, we created a persona for each of their learner segments. They were based on Imperial’s organisational structure which included line workers, line managers and hat managers . We used these personas to guide our course design and messaging for each segment, according to the literacy of the learners.

  • We interviewed course trainers from the organisation to help us build each persona.

  • Our goal was to specify the learner’s preferred channels of content consumption, their learning aptitude and their level of tech-literacy.

  • The data we gathered influenced the format of the content we created and the tools we selected for its distribution.

  • We reflected back on the personas at every stage of the design and production of the courses, including script writing, voiceovers, and visuals.

Learner Journeys

Our objective was to improve learner engagement, so we had to ensure that our learners completed their courses without any hiccups. Together with the Course Editor, our designers sketched the learner journeys to identify opportunities for improvement. We identified that multiple modules, and assessments, were too long and data intensive, creating potential drop-off points in the flow. By sectioning modules into a series (e.g. Part I and Part II), and eliminating the low priority assessments from the new design, we ended up with much faster milestone completions that contributed to longer user sessions .

  • To test and validate the journeys we shared our preliminary scripts and storyboards with the project team from Imperial Logistics, who comprised of project managers and trainers.

  • Our team also facilitated workshops with the HR, Recruitment and Onboarding managerial teams for post-production testing. These were soon followed by their own periodic ‘soft launches’ to the rest of their businesses, which helped us gather more user feedback and continue to improve their learner journeys.

SCORM Authoring

Once the learner journeys were approved, we moved on to design the online courses in Articulate Rise 360. Our goal was to develop and publish a self-paced, online learning experience that was accessible across any device, at any time. Additionally, we needed the courses to integrate to Imperial Logistic’s existing Learning Management System (LMS) so that the trainers could track the progress of their leaners. To enable tracking, we authored and publish the courses in SCORM 1.2.

  • Our design team researched the configuration and user experience of popular e-learning platforms like LinkedIn Learning and Meta Blueprint to create automated and seamless flows.

  • The rich media capability helped us to optimise engagement by enabling us to incorporate text, video, audio and animation into the design.

  • To minimise the risk of low engagement by the learners because fear of failure, we configured the courses to track variables of ‘complete’ and ‘incomplete’, instead of ‘passed’ and ‘failed’.

UI Design

Our brief was to create a visual identity that aligned with the brand’s values and guidelines. We researched their previous marketing and communications design material to draw inspiration and to gain a deeper understanding of the brand’s look and feel.

  • The final visual style was corporate, with a palette of blues and white. I incorporated their popular hexagon shapes on the course covers and video thumbnails to create a learning environment that felt familiar to the learners.

  • Articulate Rise 360 allowed us to seamlessly create responsive course designs for desktop, tablet and mobile.

  • The final design reflected the users by showcasing their diversity in age, race and occupation through the imagery selected for the courses. Referring back to the persona goals helped to keep the design simple, with balanced negative space, to help learners navigate through their courses more efficiently.
